The original Clementi Road stretched from West Coast Road/Pasir Panjang Road at Pasir Panjang Village to Bukit Timah Circus. One of its prominent landmarks used to be the electric power station. Before Clementi Town was developed in 1975, the area was largely filled with kampongs and villages with squatter-type homes, backyard trades, cottage industries and farms. There were exclusive bungalow houses in the area.

Today, landmarks around Clementi Road include the National University of Singapore at Kent Ridge, the Ngee Ann Polytechnic, and the Transview Golf & Country Club at Dover, which was  previously the Warren Golf & Country Club.
