Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society was registered with the Registry of
Societies on 22 April 1978 and was made the Commissioner of
Charities on 26 April 1991. It is a Voluntary Welfare
Organisation that aims to promote good morals and the universal
virtues of filial piety, brotherliness, loyalty,
trustworthiness, compassion and righteousness, without
discrimination as to race, colour, creed or religion.
The Society offers help to all people by carrying out welfare
services for the good of mankind, such as rendering free
medicine and medical services and providing financial and
personal support for those who are weak, old, poor, sick or
disabled. Over the years, it has established several Child Care
Centres, Family Service Centres, Free Meal Centres, homes for
the elderly and disabled and other community, social and
welfare services for the general welfare of the community. It
also provides financial assistance, free tuition programme,
free burial services, counselling and referral services, family
life education, and education loan and subsidies for the
needy.
The Society's early contributions include organising the
Filial Piety Award and screening of filial piety films in
cinemas to promote filial piety. In 1979, it set up a free
clinic dispensing free western medicines and medical services.
It also ran "Project Sunshine", a programme which has
helped 60 poor families to pay their monthly rentals to the
Housing Development Board. Its Emergency Relief Fund has given
urgent cash relief to the poor. The Society has also actively
organised competition and contests in schools to inculcate
"Respect for Elders" and "Patriotism" in
young children. In the late 1990s, the Society also set up the
Moral Home for Disabled Adults, the first in Singapore to cater
to intellectually-disabled adults. It is a development of the
Moral Home for the Disabled, meant for children.
