Originally, Pulau Keppel was known as Pulat Hantu, where hantu in Malay means "ghost" but Keppel Shipyard, which owned the island, changed its name partly to differentiate it from another Singapore island with the same name, Pulau Hantu, and partly because it seemed inappropriate for the shipbuilding company. As Keppel Shipyard developed the island into a shipbuilding and ship-repair base, the island adopted its name and was thus renamed Pulau Keppel. The other Pulau Hantu lies close to Pulau Bukom Kechil and its name remains unchanged.
