The aim of the Singapore Kindness Movement
(SKM) is "to encourage individuals to internalise
courtesy, kindness and consideration". It focuses on small
acts of kindness and encompasses small gestures, such as a
smile, a greeting, extending a helping hand to others, holding
the lift door open for others, or offering a pregnant lady a
seat. The SKM is managed by the SKM Council, which is chaired
by Noel Hon and comprises members from educational institutions
and private organisations.
One of the major activities of the Kindness Movement is the
Singapore Kindness Week, which is held every year to promote
and raise public awareness of the importance of small acts of
kindness. The first nation-wide Singapore Kindness Week was
launched by Goh on 8 November 1998 at the Istana, and was
followed by a SKM Convention at the World Trade Centre
Auditorium on 9 November. Some 800 delegates comprising primary
and secondary school principals and teachers attended the
convention, and speakers from Japan, USA and Canada shared
their experiences in running the Kindness Movement in their
countries.
