The National Arts Council (NAC) was set up as a statutory board on 1 September 1991 to spearhead the development of the arts in Singapore. Its mission is to nurture the arts and make it an integral part of the lives of the people of Singapore. Among the functions of the NAC are:

  • to promote excellence in the arts
  • to promote the arts of Singapore overseas through artistic exchange and other activities
  • to promote the appreciation, understanding and enjoyment of the arts


There are between 10 and 25 members. The first Chairman was Professor Tommy Koh and the first Deputy Chairman was Goh Kim Leong. The first 15 charter members included Liu Thai Ker, Tan Chin Nam, John Yip Soon Kwong, Rafiq Jumabhoy, Ong Beng Seng, Kay Kuok Oon Kwong, Louis Cha, Robert Iau Kuo Kwong, Associate Professor Bernard Tan Tiong Gee, Brother Joseph McNally, Dr Uma Rajan, Chua Gim Siong, and Hawazi Daipi.

Its parent ministry is the Ministry of Communications, Information and the Arts (MITA) and is currently located in the MITA Building at 140 Hill Street, Singapore 179369.
